The Making of Leather Notebooks: The Journey of an Artisan in the Heart of India

In 2018, during my travels through India, I discovered a mysterious shop full of leather treasures. I was fascinated by everything that the local artist was creating here. I was completely blown away by the handmade work and bought a leather diary with labradorite, which became my constant companion for several years.

When the Ashariya brand was created in 2021, I did not hesitate for a moment to involve this talented artist. After three years from the first meeting, I reconnected with this man. We started coming up with new designs together and created unique diaries for the Ashariya brand.

I would like to introduce you to the entire production process of these exclusive and unique leather diaries and introduce the craftsmen involved in the entire production process. The entire production process of our leather diaries combines traditional craftsmanship with modern design, bringing unique products full of character.

The first step in the process of making leather journals is the selection of quality leather. Buffalo leather is often used for our products, which is known for its durability and natural appearance. After choosing the leather comes the preparation phase. The leather is cleaned, freed of impurities and ready for further processing. The individual parts that make up the cover of the leather diaries are cut out of the leather. Each piece of leather is carefully handcrafted to ensure its unique look and texture. This is followed by a joining process where the individual parts are joined together to form the solid structure of the journal cover.

Stitching the pages into the journal is another important step in the production process. Papers are sewn into journals using thick needles and thick threads. The production also includes setting brass locks and threading real stones. Physically demanding parts of production are left to men.

Last year I visited this family production and got to know the people who are an integral part of the whole process. What is exceptional is the employment of women, which is not very common in India. I appreciate any employer who offers financial independence to women in this way. Kuši, Ulab, Jasoda and Sunita are the proud faces of our production. The involvement of women in work processes contributes to the diversification of ideas, innovations and strengthens social equality. It allows them to develop their skills, increase their confidence and create inspiration for future generations. Their participation strengthens the economic independence of women and contributes to the overall prosperity of the community.

I was also interested in the production of handmade paper, which complements some of our diaries. Handmade paper as we know it is not just a medium for writing; it is an artistic process associated with tradition and care. The paper for Ashariya journals comes from a factory where only women are employed.

The first step in the handmade paper production process is the collection of cotton waste, which represents a sustainable approach to production. This waste is soaked in water and then a kind of plates are formed from it. Interestingly, this waste, which would otherwise have disappeared, finds a new life in the form of a unique paper.

After the sheets are made, they are dried in the sun, which gives the paper its natural texture and color. The move emphasizes an ecological approach, as solar energy replaces traditional drying methods. Subsequently, the paper is pressed to obtain the necessary strength and smoothness. The natural colors used in dyeing give the paper a rich hue and contribute to its unique aesthetic. The finished handmade paper becomes a key element of our diaries.

Every journal that leaves our workshop bears not only a trace of handwork, but also a story of determined women who overcome prejudices and breathe new life into the world of craftsmanship. We are proud to present our products that combine traditional values with modern design and promote equality in the craft industry. Each purchased diary is not only a practical item, but also a symbolic expression of support for handmade production and equality of women in the craft world.

Thank you for allowing us to share this inspiring journey. Your support means not only business success for us, but also a move forward in achieving equality and recognition of talented women in the craft industry.
